Kofi Annan is dead. He died in Switzerland, this Saturday morning after a short illness.

Kofi Atta Annan is a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006.

Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace. 


Kofi Annan was born in Kumasi at Kofandros in the then Gold coast on 8 April 1938. His twin sister Efua Atta, who died in 1991, shared the middle name Atta, which in the Akan language means twin.

From 1954 to 1957, Annan attended the Mfantsipim senior high school in the central region of Ghana. Annan graduated in 1957 the same year Ghana gained independence from the British.

in 1958 Kofi Annan was given admission to the Kumasi College of Science and Technology now known as the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to study economics. He later had a ford scholarship and completed his undergraduate studies in economics at the Macalester college in Minnesota United States in 1961. He went on to complete a diplôme d'études approfondies DEA degree in International Relations at The graduate institute of International and development studies at Geneva Switzerland in 1961 and 1962. In 1971 he did his masters degree in management at the MIT Sloan school of management.

Kofi Annan started his first term as Secretary-General on 1 January 1997.

His loss is a big blow for Ghana and the entire world because of the tremendous work he did for the peace of this world. May his soul rest in peace.
